Metaplanet, a prominent Japanese investment firm often dubbed “Asia’s MicroStrategy,” announced on Monday its acquisition of Bitcoin valued at approximately 1 billion yen ($6.3 million). The funds for this purchase were derived from a recent bond sale, as stated by the company in an official release.
The firm clarified that these newly acquired Bitcoin holdings are designated for long-term investment purposes and will be recorded at their acquisition cost. According to Metaplanet, such holdings are exempt from taxation based on periodic assessments of their market value.
In addition to these strategic purchases, Metaplanet also manages other Bitcoin holdings, which are subject to quarterly market price evaluations. Any resulting gains or losses from these evaluations will be categorized under non-operating income or expenses.
Long-Term Strategy and Recent Acquisitions
Metaplanet affirmed its commitment to holding Bitcoin over the long term, considering it a core asset within its investment portfolio. Should any Bitcoin be utilized for operational needs or other purposes, the equivalent balance will be reflected as current assets on the company’s balance sheet.
Before this latest acquisition, Metaplanet had already executed three separate Bitcoin purchases within the span of seven weeks. Its most recent transaction involved acquiring 23.25 Bitcoin valued at approximately $1.59 million, bringing its total Bitcoin holdings to 141.07 BTC. With the addition of the $6.3 million worth of Bitcoin purchased on Monday, Metaplanet’s total holdings are set to exceed 240 BTC, equivalent to around $15 million.
Hedging Against Economic Challenges
Metaplanet’s decision to significantly invest in Bitcoin aligns with its strategy to hedge against Japan’s mounting debt concerns and the depreciating value of the yen. The company highlighted Japan’s high government debt and persistent negative interest rates as contributing factors to its strategic pivot towards Bitcoin.
As a result of its proactive stance, Metaplanet’s stock price surged nearly 14% on Monday alone, marking a 37% increase over the past month. This move has solidified its position as the 30th largest corporate Bitcoin holder globally, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries.
While Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings are notably smaller compared to industry leader MicroStrategy, which holds 226,331 BTC, the firm’s dedicated integration of Bitcoin into its treasury assets has garnered significant attention and investor interest.
