Damien Hirst burned hundreds of his original paintings, which are collectively valued at roughly £10 million, in order to carry out his promise to destroy NFTs as part of a digital art experiment. The Currency is made up of 10,000 NFTs, special digital tokens that can be bought online and are each worth the same as 10,000 genuine pieces of art. The “wealthiest” artist in the UK is exhibiting there.
Hirst’s strategy was to give collectors the option of keeping their NFT or exchanging it for an actual piece of art while pledging to destroy any paintings that weren’t exchanged. Hirst’s sociological experiment, which contrasts the value of real art versus digital art, includes the project.
Collectors who paid the $2,000 base price for one of the NFTs had a year to choose whether they wanted to keep the NFT or exchange it for genuine artwork.
