In a significant blow to Turkey’s burgeoning cryptocurrency market, BtcTurk, the country’s largest crypto exchange, confirmed on Saturday that it had fallen victim to a cyber attack resulting in the theft of approximately €51 million worth of digital assets.
The attack, which occurred on June 22, 2024, prompted BtcTurk to halt all cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals as a precautionary measure. The exchange assured users that its cold wallets, where the majority of funds are stored offline, remained secure. However, balances in several hot wallets linked to 10 different cryptocurrencies were compromised.
BtcTurk, in a statement addressing the incident, stated, “Our teams have detected that there was a cyber attack on our platform which caused uncontrolled withdrawals. Our cold wallets, where most of the assets are kept, are safe. User assets will not be affected by these losses.”
The exchange also emphasized its financial stability, asserting that the amount stolen did not pose a threat to its operational integrity. Security authorities have been alerted, and BtcTurk indicated that a detailed investigation into the breach is currently underway.
ZachXBT, a prominent Bitcoin analyst, speculated on social media about the possible identity of the hacker, pointing to a specific cryptocurrency address allegedly involved in moving large sums to other platforms.
Cryptocurrencies have gained immense popularity in Turkey, particularly since 2020, as citizens sought alternatives amidst economic instability exacerbated by the sharp depreciation of the lira. Turkey ranks as the fourth-largest crypto trading market globally, underscoring its significant stake in the digital currency landscape.
The hacking incident at BtcTurk follows a series of challenges within Turkey’s crypto sector, including the notorious case involving Thodex, where founder Faruk Fatih Ozer was sentenced last year to an unprecedented prison term for defrauding investors.
As investigations continue and BtcTurk works to restore full functionality to its platform, stakeholders and investors remain vigilant amidst the evolving cybersecurity landscape of digital assets.
