The cryptocurrency market faced declines early on Tuesday, with both Bitcoin and Coinbase Global seeing drops in their values. Analysts are eyeing developments around exchange-traded funds (ETFs) linked to Ether as a potential catalyst for the sector’s future direction.
Bitcoin, the leading cryptocurrency, experienced a 0.9% decrease over the past 24 hours, settling at $62,778. This comes after a peak near $74,000 in mid-March following the launch of new spot ETFs, marking a subsequent decline in price.
According to Alex Kuptsikevich, an analyst at FxPro, Bitcoin is currently navigating within a downward channel, with potential for a rebound towards the upper boundary at $67,000. Kuptsikevich suggests cautious buyers might await confirmation of a price rise above $72,000-$73,000, signaling a new phase of growth.
Meanwhile, Coinbase Global, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, saw a 1.2% decline in premarket trading. The company’s CEO, Brian Armstrong, disclosed plans to sell 23,075 shares valued at approximately $5.4 million. This move is part of a prearranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan, designed to automate stock trades based on preset conditions, thereby mitigating potential insider advantage related to undisclosed information.
Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, mirrored Bitcoin’s decline, dropping 1.2% to $3,444. Despite this recent dip, Ether has shown remarkable resilience with an 80% increase over the past year. The anticipation surrounding Ether-focused ETFs received a boost as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently approved rule changes necessary for their trading. SEC Chair Gary Gensler indicated that final approvals for these ETFs are expected by summer, potentially accelerating market activity sooner than anticipated.
“Market participants are optimistic about a faster timeline for ETF trading,” noted Matteo Greco, a research analyst at Fineqia International, referring to Gensler’s suggestion of potential ETF trading beginning in a few weeks, contrary to earlier expectations of a September launch.
In the broader cryptocurrency landscape, altcoins demonstrated mixed performance: Solana rose marginally by 0.1%, Cardano saw a 2.5% increase, while Dogecoin declined by 2.4%.
As the crypto market continues to evolve amidst regulatory developments and shifting investor sentiment, stakeholders remain vigilant for signs of market stabilization and growth opportunities.
