Germany Transfers Millions in Bitcoin to Various Wallets: BKA Moves 900 BTC to Kraken, Coinbase, and an Untagged Wallet

In a notable series of transactions, the German Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has transferred a significant amount of Bitcoin to various wallets. According to data from Arkham, a wallet associated with the BKA sent 900 Bitcoin (BTC) valued at approximately $54.4 million during the early hours in Europe today.

The transactions were divided into three distinct transfers:

Kraken Exchange: 200 BTC ($12 million)

Coinbase Exchange: 200 BTC ($12 million)

Untagged Wallet: 500 BTC ($30.4 million) labeled as “139Po”

These transfers are part of a broader pattern, following significant movements last week. On June 19, the BKA sent $130 million worth of BTC to various exchanges, and another $65 million on June 20.

The origins of these Bitcoin holdings trace back to a high-profile seizure from the operators of the film piracy website Movie2k.to. The authorities confiscated over $2 billion worth of Bitcoin, obtained from nearly 50,000 BTC, which the suspects transferred to the BKA in mid-January in what has been described as a ‘voluntary transfer.’

The recent BTC movements have spurred speculation. Some analysts suggest that the German authorities might be preparing to liquidate their holdings, which could introduce selling pressure in the market. Others believe this could be a strategy to diversify assets across multiple exchanges, possibly for security or liquidity reasons.

Germany currently holds 46,359 BTC, worth approximately $2.8 billion at current prices. This positions the nation as one of the largest known state holders of Bitcoin, trailing behind the United States, China, and the United Kingdom.

The BKA’s strategic handling of these assets reflects the growing complexity and significance of cryptocurrency management by national authorities. The implications of these movements will be closely watched by market participants and policymakers alike.
