Banking Giant Standard Chartered to Launch Bitcoin, Ethereum Trading Desk: Details

Standard Chartered (LON:STAN), a major player in the global banking sector, is reportedly preparing to launch a dedicated trading desk for bitcoin (BTC) and ethereum (ETH), sources familiar with the matter revealed to Bloomberg. This move positions Standard Chartered at the forefront among global banks embracing spot cryptocurrency trading.

The upcoming crypto desk, which is nearing operational readiness, will be integrated into the bank’s foreign exchange (FX) trading division. Sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the information, indicated that the initiative is poised to be managed from London, underscoring the bank’s strategic pivot toward digital assets.

Standard Chartered’s entry into cryptocurrency trading marks a significant departure from its traditional banking services, signaling a proactive response to the increasing significance of cryptocurrencies in the global financial landscape.

The bank has been making strategic investments in the cryptocurrency sector, including stakes in Zodia Custody and Zodia Markets. These companies specialize in providing services ranging from secure custody solutions to over-the-counter trading, aligning with Standard Chartered’s broader digital asset strategy.

The move comes amidst a broader trend of institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies. Recently, Australia’s largest equities exchange listed its first spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF), reflecting growing investor demand for regulated cryptocurrency investment vehicles.

In related news, MicroStrategy, a prominent business intelligence firm led by CEO Michael Saylor, announced a significant acquisition of bitcoin. The company purchased an additional 11,931 BTC for approximately $786 million, expanding its total holdings to 226,331 BTC, acquired at an average price of $36,798 per bitcoin.

As Standard Chartered prepares to roll out its cryptocurrency trading desk, market observers anticipate its impact on the institutional adoption of digital assets and the broader financial services industry.
