British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak: In what ways does this affect cryptocurrencies?

The United Kingdom’s next prime minister is Rishi Sunak. Liz Truss, the former prime minister, resigned after 45 days in office after receiving harsh criticism, and Sunak is now in control. After his rivals Penny Mordaunt and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdrew from the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party, he was declared the winner. Crypto specialists see Sunak’s selection as the new prime minister of the UK favorably. Major changes to the blockchain business are anticipated by Sunak, who is reported to be a pro-crypto politician.

Sunak, a 42-year-old former investment banker who is now a politician, made his debut statement in that capacity outside Downing Street. Sunak stated that he is committed to “fixing the mistakes” done by Liz Truss, his predecessor.

The British politician of Indian descent formerly held the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022. On July 5th of this year, in the midst of the then-prime minister Boris Johnson’s political turmoil and scandals, he announced his resignation as chancellor. Johnson resigned shortly after, and the hunt for a new prime minister was launched. Sunak took part but lost to Truss, who took over for Boris on September 5.

Truss’ administration, however, lasted less than two months when she resigned on October 20 as a result of a new political crisis. When Truss’s administration introduced a “mini-budget” to boost the economy, both the general public and her cabinet colleagues sharply criticized it. This led to Truss’s demise. Even the markets were agitated by the revelation, with sterling falling and investors sharply selling British government bonds. The mini budget’s significant tax cuts, which include eliminating the top earners’ 45% tax rate and rolling back previous tax increases, generated the greatest discussion.

Sunak entered the contest to be re-elected as the next PM after Truss’ departure, giving him a second chance to compete for the leadership position. Boris Johnson, a former prime minister, and Penny Mordaunt were his opponents. But in the days that followed, Johnson voluntarily withdrew from the race, and Mordaunt also did the same.

On October 25, Sunak had a clear path to become the next Conservative Party leader and, consequently, the new prime minister of the sixth-largest economy in the world.

The blockchain sector believes Sunak’s selection would likely result in a radical paradigm change for cryptocurrencies.

Sunak had mentioned establishing the UK as a center for cryptocurrency when serving as finance minister under the former prime minister Johnson. Sunak announced the Financial Services and Markets Bill while serving as Johnson’s FM. If passed into law, this legislation would give regional regulators broad influence over the cryptocurrency market.

Richard Menon WazirX, the vice president, said: “An advocate for fintech is Rishi Sunak. His appointment as PM is very advantageous for bitcoin. While acting as chancellor, Sunak declared his desire to turn the UK into a center for cryptocurrency.”

It would start by bringing asset-pegged cryptocurrencies like stablecoins within the jurisdiction of payment rules. He oversaw the creation of the nation’s non-fungible token (NFT) collection at the Royal Mint, which makes the country’s coinage.”

With Sunak’s appointment as PM, even millionaire Changpeng Zhao anticipates great things for the UK.

According to daily trade volume, the creator of Binance, which is the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world, tweeted, “I briefly introduced myself to RishiSunak on June 20. (4 months ago, at a party). didn’t have time to talk. He just showed that a minor setback frequently results in major gains over the long term. wishing the UK well in the future.”

Tuesday’s worldwide crypto market valuation is currently at $941.73 billion on CoinMarketCap, up 1.8% from the previous day. In the previous day, the biggest cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, increased by over 1% and almost 4%, respectively. In the past 24 hours, BNB, Cardona, Solana, and Dogecoin have all increased by 2–4%.

The largest cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, is presently just shy of $19,500, while Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency, is about $1,380.

There are around 21,499 cryptocurrencies and 520 cryptocurrency exchanges, according to statistics from CoinMarketCap.

The sector anticipates that Sunak’s appointment as the next PM would lead to much-needed transformation for cryptocurrencies. But there is a catch since Sunak has also long supported digital currencies that are backed by central banks.

Mudrex – A Global Crypto Investing Platform’s CEO and co-founder Edul Patel said, “Rishi Sunak, a purportedly pro-crypto politician, is now in charge of things in the UK. In the UK, a sizable portion of the populace continues to be distrustful of cryptocurrencies. The hiring of Sunak may result in a radical paradigm change in that. There is a catch, though! For a very long period, Rishi Sunak has supported Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).”

CBDC is a kind of money that may be created by a central bank, such as the Bank of England. Because it isn’t actual money like notes and coins, it is referred to as digital or electronic money. It appears on a computer or other such device as a quantity. Some UK residents refer to this potential digital currency as “Britcoin” or “digital pound.”

According to the Bank of England website, CBDC is distinct from cryptocurrencies (also known as crypto assets). A central bank does not issue cryptocurrencies. These privately issued digital currencies include Bitcoin, Ether (Ethereum), and XRP.
