Actor Bill Murray had a security compromise that resulted in the attacker obtaining 119.2 ETH, or $185,000, just hours after soliciting money through an NFT auction.
The NFT auction, which was a component of a campaign to collect money for Chive Charities, came to a close on August 31. Evelyn, a three-year-old child suffering from uncontrollable seizures and a rare CLDN5 gene mutation, was intended to get care from the profits of the charity event.
The mentioned NFT, which is a part of the actor’s “Billy Murray 1000” NFT collection and was organized by The Shack in collaboration with Coinbase’s NFT globe, aims to provide fans the chance to eat with the well-known star. Murray will be available to have a beer with the NFT auction winner.
Murray’s wallet, nevertheless, seems to have been closely watched by the hacker(s) during the transaction. The hacker removed the money from the wallet many hours after the sale was finished. On-chain data from Etherscan shows that the hacker started stealing the money on September 1. Murray’s team also disclosed that a security team from NFT consultancy Project Venkman foiled the malevolent person’s attempt to take roughly 800 NFTs from the actor’s private collection.
Only 82 of the 1,000 NFTs in the collection have been released so far (only the 1/1 comes with beer utility), and the cheapest edition is listed at 11 ETH, or roughly $17,000, on Coinbase’s (COIN) marketplace, according to a statement from the company.
Investigations have shown that the money has already been transferred to an address connected to the cryptocurrency exchanges Union Chain and Binance, albeit it is still unknown how the hacker was able to access Murray’s wallet. Murray’s team has already filed a police report in response to the occurrence to start investigations, and they are in contact with the crypto analysis company Chainalysis to undertake a forensic audit into the issue.

Unexpectedly, a Coinbase customer is said to have paid 120 ETH to Chive Charities to replace the money that was stolen.
