A brand-new NFT initiative backed by the blockchain has been unveiled by Reddit under the name “Collectible Avatars.” The new digital collectibles were unveiled on Thursday, July 7, by the debate platform renowned for content aggregation and rating, with the announcement that they will be made public in a few weeks.
A press release from Reddit employees announcing the availability of blockchain-based Reddit avatars supported on the Polygon network was where the announcement was initially made public. The release states that neither cryptocurrencies nor an auction are required to buy these avatars. Each avatar has a set price that may be paid for using fiat (government-issued) money.
The Collectible Avatars, meanwhile, are only accessible during the NFT presale stage and are offered as first-looker early access to a select few who register on the r/CollectibleAvatars forum. The forum offers a way to become familiar with the creative artists, learn more about Collectible Avatars, and set up wallets for storage. It serves as a venue for AMAs pertaining to projects.
Reddit advised owners to use Vault, the platform’s blockchain-enabled wallet that runs on Ethereum-compatible chains, to manage the Collectible Avatars. Redditors keep their community points in Vault as well.

Reddit Aids Platform-Based Artists
Reddit’s blog article states that the new collection of Collectible Avatars is a limited edition created in association with Reddit by unidentified artists. When Reddit users choose their Collectible Avatar as their avatar, they will receive specific platform perks. One such advantage is the ability to mix and match their profile photograph with avatar clothes and accessories and add a glow-like effect to it in the comments.
The release states that each sale will result in royalties being paid to the digital artists who produced the works, with each unique purchase granting the particular NFT owners rights to the artwork both on and off the platform. Additionally, NFT owners may trade Collectible Avatars on non-Reddit secondary markets like OpenSea and SuperRare.
The majority of the artists that took part in this initiative were selected from well-known creative groups like r/comics, r/procreate, and Adobe Illustrator, growing and bringing forth their learned and gained abilities to build Collectible Avatars, according to the Reddit press release. Additionally, certain artists from Reddit’s network who were nearby were given the chance to debut their work on the site.
The collaboration between the social media and conversation platform and Arbitrum in 2021 for their layer two (L2) technology with Ethereum-based community point tokens adds to the platform’s blockchain technology repository. Before reporting in January 2022 on the purported testing of NFT profile image functions, Reddit recruited an executive engineer for a platform that enabled NFT-backed digital commodities later that year.
